Hot Mom Summer: Your Halifax Heat Wave Survival Guide (With Kids)

When the temperature climbs and the air feels like soup, you’re not the only one melting. Babies and toddlers are especially vulnerable to heat, and figuring out how to keep them cool without losing your mind can feel like a full-time job.

At Mat Leave Moms, we’ve tested stroller fans, tracked down shade in every corner of HRM, and splashed in more kiddie pools than we can count. This guide pulls together what’s actually worked for us—plus where to find it, what to do when you're stuck inside, and a few spots around Halifax that are worth leaving the house for.

Before we dive in: if you're unsure what's safe when it comes to heat and kids, we recommend checking the Canada Safety Guidelines for Children in Extreme Heat for a helpful overview.

Hot Weather MVPs: Amazon Baby Essentials

These aren’t just random Amazon bestsellers; we’ve tried them, loved them, and swear by them for getting through a humid Halifax summer.

  • Stroller Fan
A must-have! Clip it onto the stroller or car seat and you’ve instantly upgraded to first-class airflow. It’s a must-have for Sip & Strolls and mall walks alike.

  • Lightweight Sleep Sacks
Lightweight and breathable. Swap out fleece or heavy cotton for something that actually lets the heat out while your little one sleeps like bamboo or muslin.

  • Pop-Up UV Tent
Whether we’re beach-bound or just setting up in the backyard, these shady little pods keep babies protected and give moms a break from the sun stress. Extra points when combined with a kiddie pool and stroller fan, * chef’s kiss *.

  • Freezer Teethers
Silicone ones are great - cold, chewable, and mess-free.

  • Inflatable Baby Pool
Even just an inch or two of water can turn a sweltering afternoon into something resembling fun. We love pairing it with a big umbrella and a cold drink for us.

  • Cooling Gel Pads for Strollers/Car Seats
No more sweaty-back screams. These liners help regulate temperature on hot seats and are easy to remove and rinse. This one is in our Amazon cart - we haven’t tried it yet, but will report back.

  • Misting Bottles
Toss one in the diaper bag. A fine mist on the back of the neck (or thighs, let’s be honest) makes all the difference on stroller walks. You’ll want some for yourself, too.

Many of these are available on Amazon, but we always check Nurtured and Fluffy Bottom Babies first. Supporting local when we can makes it even better.

We love the convenience of Amazon, but not as much as we love supporting the incredible local businesses here in HRM. Luckily, there are great Halifax baby stores where you can grab what you need to beat the heat:

Chill Activities for You and Baby

It’s easy to hide out in front of the AC all day, but around here, we’re all about low-effort, out-of-the-box fun that keeps everyone cool and entertained. Think creative little activities using stuff you probably already have lying around the house.

  • Frozen Fruit in Mesh Feeders
Try watermelon, blueberries, or peaches. Soothing for teething babies and perfectly messy.

  • Sensory Ice Bins
Freeze toys or washcloths in ice cubes and pop them into a shallow tray for some cool sensory fun.

  • Frozen Sponge “Pops”
Freeze damp sponges in popsicle molds for a safe, melty sensory chew toy.

  • Fan + Blanket Fort Time
Set up a simple fort with a bedsheet and a box fan for a breezy play space that feels like magic (and keeps the sun out).

    Bath in a Storage Bin
Don’t have a kiddie pool? A clean Rubbermaid bin or laundry basket in the shade works just fine. Add some plastic cups and a few toys.

Final Thoughts (Before We Fully Melt)

Heatwaves with kids are not for the faint of heart. But with the right gear, a few indoor ideas, and a solid list of spots with AC and snacks, you can totally handle it.

Stay cool, stay safe, and when in doubt, group chat it out. That’s what the Mat Leave Moms Collective is for.
